Because looks have so much to do with politics...

About a year ago, the College Republicans on my campus proved themselves to be both tasteless and sexist. Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to see what they did... but I had heard from several people that they took it upon themselves to post flyers all around campus with images of "unattractive" Democrat women, along with pictures of "attractive" Republican women, with the phrase, "This is why men prefer Republican women." The other day, I was browsing the Facebook group of the College Republicans and found that someone had posted part of said flyer:

Lovely, ain't it? But you'll be happy to know that some members of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance wouldn't have it. To protest this disgusting tactic, they made masks out of these faces, put them on, and attended the next College Republicans meeting, where they stood silently, holding signs. It prompted a friendly debate, and the members re-thought their charming flyers. I doubt they'll be pulling a similar stunt anytime soon - and if they do, I'll be on their asses so fast they won't know what hit 'em.

What next?

Hey... I just wanted to mention that we didn't do it officially as a club.. because some of the people in the club didn't want to do it, so we just sort of did it independently. I guess so that it wouldn't be seen as an attack by the club itself.. I dunno. Also we made cool signs contrasting superficial issues (i.e. looks) with important ones, like "WHAT'S WORSE? Cutting funds to UNFPA or flabby thighs?"
It was an awesome experience... it just killed me to learn that the person who made the signs to put around campus was a woman. She said it was all a joke.. I later asked her how funny she would think it was if she was turned down for a job because the male boss didn't find her attractive enough (I didn't get an answer). We just felt that even if they thought it was a joke, once they put it on flyers with their club's name on it, we took it seriously. Women come to college to receive an education, NOT be told that they will be judged based on their looks.

PS ... their flyers had that picture as well as pictures of supposedly attractive republican women.. and it said "This is why men prefer republican women."

As if my goal in life is to attract men.
