Take Action Tuesday: protecting our reproductive rights

I've written about this issue before, but it's so important we take as much action as we can. The Bush administration is pushing to pass appalling regulations on reproductive rights. If passed, this policy will:

  1. Redefine abortion to include common forms of contraception, even though birth control does not by any means cause the same internal process that abortions do. From an e-mail I got from NOW: "This expanded definition of abortion will discourage doctors and health care clinics from providing birth control products to women who need them, out of fear of losing critical federal funds."

  2. Force family planning clinics to hire and keep employees who are morally against birth control or abortion.

  3. Increase federal funding to fake clinics, or "crisis pregnancy centers" that provide no proper family planning or abortion services, and often give false information to women.

Please take a few minutes to contact Secretary Mike Leavitt of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Either send him an e-mail or leave a comment on his blog and let him know that birth control and abortion are not the same, and that these regulations will greatly reduce a woman's access to services for reproductive health.

What next?
