Obama on his next Supreme Court nominee

"...I want somebody who is going to be interpreting our Constitution in a way that takes into account individual rights, and that includes women's rights... And that's going to be something that's very important to me, because I think part of what our core constitutional values promote is the notion that individuals are protected in their privacy and their bodily integrity. And women are not exempt from that."

Hmm. He's expected to choose Justice Stevens' replacement within the next couple weeks, and I'm really excited/nervous to see who he picks.

What next?

I really hope Obama picks someone that will stand up for women rights. Obama has six women of his short list. It would be good if we could ad another female to the mix of males on the court.

I'm really glad President Obama chooses to weigh women's rights so heavily while making his decision. If this is clearly stated as his intention, I am not too concerned. I also trust that President Obama will select someone based on their qualifications and not their gender. Because our President is part of an oppressed group himself, I know he will understand the importance of overcoming the obstacles by being highly qualified and not out of pity or obligation towards the group.

To be honest, I am getting tired of everyone asserting that a women should be next. While a highly qualified woman would be ideal, I would much rather have a qualified male who will make a difference fighting for women's rights than an unqualified female put in the position because of her gender. If we place unqualified women in these roles they cannot fill, they will surely fail. And we all know that people are always waiting to jump at the opportunity to scream "that's what you get for getting a woman to do a man's job."
