Girl wrestler dominates

By: Kristi - from the series of guest posts written by Dr. Baldwin's students at Michigan State University.

This is a video about a 12-year-old girl on a wrestling team. Not only this, but she is a very successful female wrestler. As I expected, her male competitors never take her seriously until she defeats them. However, it is really interesting to me to see that the triumphs of this girl have received very positive recognition in the media. She seems to be very respected by the community and also has an extremely supportive and excited mother. I’m glad that this mother is able to support her child’s untraditional position instead of pushing her daughter into a more feminine or “girly” activity or sport. I also think the portrayal of this accomplishment as something really cool shows that society is warming up to the idea in some small ways.

What are your thoughts?

What next?

I think this is a great example of how a female's role in society is changing. This is not to say that women have never been interested in sports, because women have been playing sports for years. The problem is women don't get the same recognition for it as men do. A lot of attention is given to male sports compared to women. I think the recognition that this girl is getting will bring more attention to female athletes, proving that women can be just as good at sports as men are.

    WOW, I'm proud of her.
This video proves that girls can be just as good as (or even better than) guys in a typical "guys sports". It's brilliant that girls are involving in many outside activities such as wrestling, soccer, etc. although they don't get as much attention as guys doing it, which is unfair. But I believe if we girls keep this up (showing the public how talented we are at things other than cooking) we might be more recognized soon.

I was so excited when I read this. one of my friends younger sister is a wrestler and she is only 9 years old. she is always struggling with the young boys she goes up against and their fathers trying to get her kicked out. I am glad to see that there are other girls who are making waves and doing what they want to do, and not letting the pressures of society hinder them or hold them back.
