McCain women speak for marriage equality

It's been widely known that Meghan McCain, John McCain's outspoken daughter, is a proud supporter of same-sex marriage. She even posed in an advertisement for the "NO H8" campaign against Prop 8 in California.

And nowwww... Cindy McCain, John McCain's wife, has decided to pose for the campaign as well.

I'm very surprised that Cindy so publicly supports marriage equality. The NO H8 Campaign website posted the images and announced that Cindy and Meghan are "redefining Republican." Despite my disagreement with many of their political views and my dislike for John McCain, I really respect their willingness to go against the grain by speaking in favor of a political view that is so unpopular within the Republican party (and with John McCain himself).

I think this is an important step in the right direction, to where eventually LGBTQ rights won't be a political debate, but a given. If two of the country's most well-known Republicans can recognize that denying rights to same-sex couples is a form of hatred and discrimination, surely others can as well.

What next?

They're hardly redefining Republican, as there are zero Republicans elected to national office (of ~240 such, btw) are willing to vote against H8.

Until that changes, I don't believe their lip service to my cause, even though I hope it changes people's view of the issue.

supporting same sex marriage to "redefining republican"?

To me, it looks like they only are supporting same sex marrige to increase the liking of the people.

I mean all this time, they were agains of same sex marriage and all of sudden, they support it?
This campaign is not very convincing to me.

It would not have been convincing either if McCain or other Republicans did their own campaign to support same sex marrige.

Well, Juyeon, John McCain was against same-sex marriage... Meghan was always in favor of it, and Cindy hardly spoke about it. Keep in mind that promoting same-sex marriage while a family member is running as a member of the Republican party is essentially political suicide. If any McCain spoke out in favor of same-sex marriage while John was running, they would have lost a lot of followers. And I understand that... I understand how politics works... it's the same reason that Obama won't come right out and say he supports same-sex marriage (even though I believe he actually does). True, coming out in favor of queer rights while in office or running for office is more brave and worthy of recognition, but I still commend what they are doing... I don't think they would have posed for these ads if they didn't truly support nondiscrimination.

Personally, I think this is great. Finally people in respective roles aren't afraid to stand up for what they believe. The McCain family is well known and I truly hope this spikes peoples interest in getting their voices heard.

People should have a right to marry who ever they want. Though it may be against many religions, if you love someone then go for it and be happy.

Im not sure I really understand the McCains. I agree that it is admirable for them to display this sort of support, however, it seems as though they just want to gain public acceptance.
I realize it is a common belief among republicans that same sex marriage is not acceptable, however, I wonder what would have happened if these woman would have made thier voices a bit louder durring the presidential campaign.
Unavoidable, McCain would have lost many supporters however I have to wonder if the outcome of the presidential election would have been any different.
Either way, he idea that same sex marriage has any restrictions on it is absolutly repulsive to me. Human beings are all equal and deserve equal rights! right?

I think it's great that Cindy and Meghan are portraying themselves as strong and independent women, instead of standing in the shadow of their husband/father. I am also a big supporter of equal rights to the gay community, and I hope that these women can inspire other people in respective roles to stand up for this act.

its nice to see that Meghan and Cindy McCain can stand up and support gay right and what they believe in, and show that they may be republicans but they dont necessarly agree with everything that the party stands for. as a republican its nice to see because i also support gay rights and equality for all.

I truly believe in same sex marriages, i do not believe that being homosexual is a choice, and if a person is punished for reasons that they have no control over; is completely ridiculous. It is equivalent to the discrimination and the inequality that African Americans were shown when they were unable to vote.

This blog is interesting. It is encouraging to see people standing out of the crowd to speak for their rights. McCain women supporting gay marriage as a part of the republic party portrays the courage that they inherit to go against the social views. After-all, people should have the right to marry the person of their interest, regardless of the gander.

I don't understand why people feel that being republican and being conservative is the same thing. I am proud to say that I am republican, but it doesn't mean that I think less of people who are gay. People are people and should all be treated equally. I'm glad the McCains are showing that just because you're a republican does not mean that you have to have conservativ view points.

I agree with Rudi, I personally dont like labeling myself but when it comes down to it i consider myself a very moderate republican, but I still support gay rights and legalized abortion. People think just because you are a republican that you are closed minded.

Politically speaking I don't know what I would be labeled but I definitely believe in same sex marriage and think its wonderful to see both of these women endorsing it. I think its a brave thing for anyone to stand up for their beliefs when others out there think differently. Taking that risk shows strength and some hardcore belief in what they are supporting. Even if the campaigns may have been just for public acceptance I think it was a very admirable gesture.
