Gaza judge rules in favor of headscarves for female lawyers

In Palestine, women are able to study law... but they are not able to show their hair.

Gaza's top judge said Sunday that he has ordered female lawyers to wear Muslim headscarves when they appear in court, the latest sign that the Islamic militant group is increasingly imposing its strict interpretation of Islamic law on residents of the coastal strip.

It was chilling to hear this because it's apparent that women's rights are slowly being eroded. The Gaza-based Palestinian Center for Human Rights called this ruling a "dangerous violation of personal freedoms and women's rights."

Yet some women defend headscarves, believing it to be an important personal choice. Still, it's tough to argue that requiring women to cover up isn't a blatant attempt to control them, since not wearing one is a good way to get arrested. Thoughts?

What next?

As many women believe, it should be a CHOICE. If the choice is taken away from these women, then they are being oppressed.

It's not much of a choice, if it's not a choice.

If wearing a headscarf is required, then it is not following the true practices of religion. If a non-muslim woman is required to also wear a headscarf, but she does not believe in it, then this is simply a form of oppression. What is the head judge going to require next? This is not a fair ordering to women. Someone needs to fight for the rights of these women, someone needs to help stop the oppression. Since these women can not do it themselves, it should be us, other women, that are trying to help.

I am a young Muslim woman who just started wearing the hijab last year. I must say that the hijab is a MUST in Islam. Muslim women should understand why, we've learned about that since forever. Moreover, if you really believe in Islam, then you would really believe in hijab. As I mentioned earlier, I just started last year. Why didn't I wear the hijab in my first 18 years of life? Because Islam doesn't FORCE. (though, I am responsible for the sin that I have done) A girl MUST cover herself when she is condsidered mature, which is after she got her period. So, I disagree that women who aren't wearing hijab should be put in jail! That's so cruel. Yes, somebody needs to do something about that law because it's oprresing women. They have the right to choose. BUT, if you're a Muslim, you MUST wear the hijab. I don't think that the goverment law should mess with religious law. Get what I'm saying?
For the record, I'm from somewhere in Asia, and my country is quite liberal. So we don't get arrested for not wearing hijab.
