Why can't you believe it? Iowa has a long-standing history as a leader in civil rights. In 1839, before it was even an official state, it refused to recognize ANY person as property. Iowa also squelched "separate but equal" school segregation 85 YEARS before the U.S. Supreme Court did.

I am so sick of geographical superiority--regionalism is regressive and has no place in discussions of equal rights.

I really wasn't attempting to practice geographical superiority. I just know that New York has been considering legalizing, and I like to think of New York as a really progressive state. I'm also really hopeful because I'm born and raised in New York. But I wasn't trying to put down Iowa. I just really didn't expect it.

Yeah I don't think Amy meant that Iowa wasn't progressive, but that she thought New York WAS. A lot of people see New York as a very liberal state... and it's just surprising that it's taking this long for NY to legalize same-sex marriage. And also, despite all of the great facts you just mentioned about Iowa being progressive... I don't think a lot of people are aware of that (which sucks).
