Men laid off as more women become 'breadwinners'

This video from MSNBC talks about how the jobs being hit hardest by the economy are held predominantly by men, leaving many women as the sole breadwinners for their families. Of course, the sad part is that women are still only paid about 80 cents for every dollar that men make, so the wage gap is now hurting even more struggling families. Additionally, though many women are working full-time to make ends meet, many of them are still performing the same amount of housework as before. Men are failing to step up and help around the house, so the women are shouldering work inside the home, and outside.

What next?

My husband has been graduated from college for 2 years, and because of his near lack of work experience, he is unable to find work. I graduated last August, and have been working full time to support both of us. I think the reason this tough economy is starting to favor women is sad - companies want to keep the people they can have been able to get away with paying the least (young people, women) and who are seen as more likely to be agreeable and docile in the workplace (again, women) that they can easily exploit and give less than their work is worth. I am working a temp job (all that seems to be available) with no benefits and that only pays $13 an hour. It is very hard. But, my husband has stepped up. He has taken over all of the chores - he cooks, cleans (all but the bathroom - I'm fine with doing that much), vacuums, takes out the trash, does the laundry, and the tidying-up. I caught me a good one! Weird thing is - he's a registered Republican! He is getting more liberal the longer he is with me (hence the being a homemaker), so there is hope yet on that issue! ;)
