Talk shows debating children and gender roles

I was watching Dr. Phil (I usually can't stand to watch him, but I was flipping through channels and it caught my eye), and there were parents and child psychologists on to debate the issue of transgendered children. Three people believed it is not a choice and it is something to be embraced, and the other three believed that with special therapy, transgendered children can be "cured." I was searching on YouTube to find a video of it to post in here, but I couldn't find it - probably because it's too new. But I did come across this video of the same issue being debated on "The View." The video's rather old, but it's interesting to watch nonetheless.

The only one who is really opposed to breaking out of gender roles is Sherri Shepherd, who is very concerned with adhering to social norms and with steering her children into their narrow gender boxes. Her worst nightmare is her son putting on a dress.

What next?

WOW. A boy in this society will learn quickly enough not to wear a dress. Kids like to make believe. Would she stop a girl if she wanted to put on a play suit and pretend to be a guy?

Sherri has said things like this before. When talking about her son playing with dolls, for example, she admitted that she would take the toy away from him and say that he wouldn't play with that. She's go ahead and give him a truck or something else instead.

I can't remember if somebody challenged that and asked her if she'd do the same with a daughter or niece playing with trucks, but I doubt she would've had a good answer for that.
