A lesson in sexism from 90s television

I'll admit it: I grew up watching the show Sister, Sister. And I'll still watch it when it's on TV. God help me.

But, surprisingly, I was watching an episode recently that made me beyond happy because it offered a nice little lesson in fighting sexism. Tia and Tamera (the twins) face off against a group of ignorant boys who try to bar them from playing hockey, solely because they "might break a nail." I found the episode on YouTube. If you have a younger daughter or son, sister or brother, it might be a good thing to show them.

What next?

It reminds me of a episode of The Jetsons. They were talking and showing how bad women drivers are. They left the episode saying "As long their are cars, there will always be women drivers." Or something like that, I felt really surprised by it.

The show Sister Sister opened my eyes to some of the injustices against women. My favorite episode is when one of the girls gets the wrong pay check at work and realizes that a boy who does the same thing as her is getting paid more. That was the first time that someone had pointed out the unequal treatment to me and it really had a big impact on me as a child. After that episode I wanted to go out in to the workforce and prove that my work has just as much worth as a male's.

I was a fan on the 90's and I think I never realized how deep it was that episode. I think it's great, that means not all TV was crap then,
