Miss Landmine: not just a beauty pageant

Landmines are a major problem in at least 99 countries today. For those of you who don't know, landmines are explosives that are set off when someone steps on or near them, causing injury or death. Angola is one country that is severely affected by mines. How can landmine survivors cope? Well, perhaps by participating in Miss Landmine, a beauty contest for women in Angola who have been injured (physically and/or emotionally) and disfigured by landmines.

Miss Landmine is the work of a Norwegian theatre director, who was appalled by the extent of the landmine problem in Angora. Miss Landmine's motto is: "Everyone has the right to be beautiful." All contestants are receiving about £100 a day by the government to take part, and will be allowed to keep the dresses and jewellery they wear. The winner will become an international ambassador for landmine survivors.

Some oppose the beauty contest; one organization refused to take part, calling it a "freak show." But harsh words can't stop these women. Miss Landmine is a great way to celebrate the inner and outer beauty of women who have endured terrible hardships, while raising awareness about an important issue.
