Students protest Schlafly

Just an update on the recent incident involving Washington University giving Phyllis Schlafly, avid opponent of feminism and the equal rights amendment, an honorary doctorate.

Many students are outraged by this, and rightfully so. Schlafly has done and said some outrageous things regarding where she feels a woman's place in society "should" be. I can't imagine what Washington University was thinking when they chose to honor this woman.

Students have made a website, organized protests, and are planning to silently protest Schlafly's ceremony by standing up and putting their backs to her. Schlafly's response to this uproar? Well, she claims that "students today have too much time on their hands," and she has also stated in interviews that she thinks these protests shows how "mischievous" the feminist movement is. She also doesn't think it is justified for students to disagree with her based on her opposition of the ERA in the 70s, because "they weren't alive back then." Right. Because only those who were alive in the 70s will be affected by the ERA. She also accused Women's Studies classes of fueling these protests.

Washington University's response? Well, they defend their position by saying that with such a diverse student body that holds varying viewpoints, it would be impossible to honor someone that everyone would agree with.

They just don't seem to get the difference between students disagreeing with someone, and students feeling degraded by someone. Schlafly preaches making women into second-class citizens. How can they honor someone who has spent her life trying to keep women in the kitchen?

What next?

What frustrates me and boggles my mind the most about this is the fact that without feminism Schlafly would not have been able to attend college or be in the position she is to be able to say these things. Does she not understand that?

    fankjblf;ab makes no sense!

"American women are the most fortunate creatures on the face of the Earth. We have the opportunity to do whatever we want."

AMERICAN WOMEN HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE OF FEMINISM.

    WHAT A COMPLETE PSYCHOTIC MORON.

When talking about the movie... "she wanted to do her own thing". OH HOW HORRIBLE. HOW DARE A WOMAN WANT TO BE INDEPENDENT AND MAKE HER OWN DECISIONS. OHHH FEMINISM SILLY FEMINISM!!!

Where does this woman get this stuff... when the interviewer told her most women get divorces because of abuse, she thinks that that means that the husband just forgot her birthday?

She seems to think it is unacceptable for a woman to get a divorce if she's fallen out of love... but does she think that's unacceptable for a man???

she had a problem with women working and being independent... but then says that she felt she should be able to support herself and she worked with guns through college?

As far as I can tell, she was a modern feminist woman until she got married. All I can assume from that is her husband was an abusive monster who brainwashed her.

Most of the time she doesn't even realize how much she is contradicting herself. What a disgusting old hag. I hope she keels over and dies soon. I will celebrate that day.

I protested a lecture given by Schlafly at my college nearly 10 years ago. I can't believe she's still around! I'm so glad to hear these students are speaking out against her.

okay so like... it completely boggles my mind how ANYONE could be happy with her receiving the honorary doctorate. not to defend republicans (cuz i pretty much hate most of them) but even the republicans/conservatives i know (though there arent many i know) wouldnt agree with most of the shit this moron says. considering that more than half the population of the world is female.. and that if that university's demographics even roughly follow that... that means the school is 1/2 female... and if schlafflafyafyalf (i cant spell it) outright opposes women doing anything but being pregnant housewives... i know this is a stream of consciousness but are you following me? how could a university give an honorary doctorate to someone who is against basic rights for HALF the student body? someone who probably doesnt think half the student body should be getting a college education? its not like this asshole did anything but try to set the women's movement back... wtf has she actually accomplished? its not even like she did something ELSE that was really spectacular.. like she runs charities but happens to hate women on the side... HATING WOMEN IS ALL SHE DOES!!!
and shes not just anti-feminist... shes anti-woman.. so i'd think that all women, even those who dont identify as feminists, would be offended by her.

    AHHH DIE.
