Anti-choicer makes threats

Roy McMillan, an anti-abortion extremist, has been ordered by a judge to stay at least fifty feet away from Mississippi's only abortion clinic. The doctor at the clinic had made a complaint against McMillan, saying he feared for his life, because McMillan made comments such as, "Your days are numbered." The doctor was so shaken that he started wearing a bulletproof vest.

It's amazing how scary anti-choicers can be sometimes. Personally, I will never understand those who pride themselves on being "pro-life" and then shoot a doctor in the head. This Summer, I'm volunteering to be a clinic escort at a Planned Parenthood in Hempstead. Even though there has never been an incident of violence at this particular clinic, I can't help but be a little worried. You never know when someone's going to take their cause just a little too far.

What next?

"They want live babies so they can raise them to be dead soldiers."
    -George Carlin

Not that he's some notorious feminist, but you get the picture. They make no sense.

Also, this line from Ani DiFranco is pretty awesome:

"Let's have a toast to all those nurses and doctors who daily provide women with a choice...who stand down a threat the size of Oklahoma City just to listen to a young woman's voice."

Roe v Wade gave men what they wanted - legalization of abortion which dumped on women full responsibility for unwanted pregnancies while imposing no limits on men's reproductive activity and men's freedom to harass women as baby killers and bar access to abortion.

For that reason I disagree with "Pro-choice" activities that uncritically accept RvW and feel obliged to take upon themselves the burden of duking it out with antiabortion misogynists. At the very least, activists should be picketing local law-enforcement headquarters to demand equal protection of the law for women (a very good way to point out the fact that there is still no constitutional provision recognizing women's right to the same guarantee of equal protection of the law that men receive as a constitutional birthright).

Why anyone would be contented to go on having to beg and plead to keep abortion legal till hell freezes over is beyond my comprehension.

For a more temporate discussion of this POV see www.equality4women.org. See also at this site how the abortion issue relates to both ERA (equal protection of the law) and pornography politics.
